Further, multi-tiered applications can be built completely in the virtual space allowing for better East-West

traffic flow. Prior to this ability offered by VMware NSX, traffic from VMs on different subnets would need

to leave the virtual space and be routed by an external physical router/L3 switch; this was true even if the

VMs were on the same physical host as shown on the left side of Figure 5 below. On the right side of

Figure 5, with NSX installed and configured, routing between the two subnets can be handled without ever

leaving the host via the kernel-level DLR within the hypervisor.
